The only folder I had was the 'Group Policy' folder in the 'windows/syswow64' folder with the 'adm' folder. Pasting the gpedit.msc in the system32 folder, loads in the machine, user and gpt.ini files in to the Group Policy folder. i have windows vista home basic, n whenever i try to run group policy editor it shows me an error saying
'MMC cannot open file C:windowssystem32gpedit.msc this may be because file does no exist is not a MMC console , or was created by a later version of MMC. This may be also because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file'
although i m running it as an administrator.
I have a feeling this is not supported in basic or premium
Lighthouse is correct, the Group Policy editor is only available in Windows Vista Small Business Edition, Professional Edition, Enterprise Edition and Ultimate edition.
Many of the policies you can set with it just set policy registry keys.
You can download an Excel Spreadsheet with a list of the policies at http://www.microsoft.com/downl...laylang=en
I don't get it. So if we go to the registry we can disable there? For me I want to disable UAC for Admin however keep elevated prompt for users. That would make it less annoying so how do I do that with Home Premium?
Yes you can.
Most all of the settings set by Group Policy are actually stored in the registry so you can just set them in the registry.
For the UAC Admin Prompt registry setting see http://www.computerperformance...havior.htm
I did as it said on the page. So now my users will be prompted but I will be less prompted or not even at all correct?
If you set the registry value it listed to 0 then Administrators will not be prompted at all.
The prompt will stay the same as it was for limited users.
how do I rid of the UAC icon(especially on desktop). Also how can I change the User prompt(or even Admin) to have to enter password?
You can't really remove the UAC icon. There was a topic a little while ago about using Resource Hacker to edit a system file to change the UAC icon to be a blank one but I don't think it's worth it.
For the values of the prompt for Administrators see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-...06328.aspx
For the values of the prompt for normal users see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-...06329.aspx
The Geek actually has a post up for Disable UAC for Administrators along with a zip of the registry hack.
Can you all provide me with some support on how to make a Visual Basic 2008(standard, C++, or C#) program and if none can help me here, can anyone direct me to where I could find some help? If and when it is completed, I will make the program avalible here and it will be open source.
If the program you are making is unrelated to the Group Policy editor then you should start a new topic on it.
Edit: Looking at the post list, it appears you did. You can ignore this post then.
